Avoiding Product Build-Up

How to remove build up in hairWe've all experienced product build-up at some point or another. Ever wonder why your style doesn't look quite as fresh as it did on the day of your salon visit? Or, have you noticed that your hair has lost its luster and bounce a few days after a fresh wash and style? Chances are you are dealing with the side effects of annoying product build-up.  Basically, product build-up is residue or film that sits on the scalp caused by the environment or usage of products that contain ingredients that are not water soluable.  Some of these products include gels, pomades, hairspray, and shine serums.  Conditioners and hair treatments that are improperly rinsed may also contribute to product build-up.

So, how do we remedy this problem? The first step would be to gather up your regularly used hair products and check the labels! If the products that you frequently use contain waxy ingredients or non-water soluable silicones, then it's time to clear your cabinets! Ideally, this would be the best solution, however, if the thought of throwing out your favorite "slick-down" gel is inconceivable, at least reduce the frequency of usage; put it in rotation with something that is less damaging to your hair. Also, be sure to properly rinse out your hair treatments and conditioners; residue on the scalp after a final rinse is not a good look!

Be sure to invest is a good clarifying shampoo to use at least once a month. We wouldn't recommend more than twice a month, as it may cause dryness of the hair and scalp.
